The Skin Care Foundation reports most common cancer in the US is of the skin and strikes one in five people by age 70. The good news is 99 percent of all cases are curable if they are diagnosed and treated early enough. However, to spot skin cancer, we need to look for it, which is why doctors recommend adults to do a routine skin check once a month and to have an annual skin check with a dermatologist at least once a year.
Since we are the best one to notice any changes in our skin, it helps to know what to look for. Experts explain skin cancers appear in many shapes and sizes, and warning signs associated with the different types of skin cancers. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (also called basal cell skin cancer) is the most common type of skin cancer accounting for 8 out of 10 cases. Basal cell cancer starts in the basal cell layer (the lower part of the epidermis). The Mayo Clinic explains squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) develops in the squamous cells that make up the middle and outer layers of the skin. While not life-threatening, it can be aggressive and typically occurs on sun-exposed skin including the scalp, the backs the hands, ears or lips, but can also occur on any part of the body. Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer and generally develops anywhere in the body that has been exposed to UV light. Additionally it may be found in spots not typically exposed to sunlight such as the bottom of the feet. The Mayo Clinic says melanoma can start as a change in an existing mole or a development of a new pigmented or unusual-looking growth on the skin. It is important to avoid UV light from the sun or tanning beds as it is one of the top culprits to damaging and aging the skin as well as causing skin cancer. Make an appointment with your healthcare provider if you have a sore or scab that doesn't heal in about two months or a flat patch of scaly skin that doesn’t go away. In addition to making your retirement years carefree, MorningStar offers the most health-conscious senior living Glendale Arizona has to offer seniors. We understand the importance of retirement communities offering proper nutrition options for seniors, especially foods high in essential vitamins and minerals. Magnesium is one nutrient that plays a critical role in maintaining overall health and well-being, especially for seniors. Our executive chefs at Morningstar have designed the most exciting menus with the freshest seasonal ingredients that retirement communities in Glendale have to offer.
Magnesium is an essential mineral that is important for many bodily functions and is found in an array of foods you might already like: chocolate, nuts and seeds, leafy greens like spinach and kale, and salmon and halibut, just to name a few that are high in magnesium. For seniors aged 55 and up, magnesium is particularly important for several reasons, including muscle and nerve function, maintaining a healthy heart rhythm, stabilizing insulin, and supporting a strong immune system. For seniors, consuming enough magnesium is crucial for maintaining healthy bones, especially as bone density tends to decrease with age. Magnesium is also important for maintaining a healthy heart rhythm and blood pressure, which can help prevent heart disease and stroke, two common health concerns for seniors. Our executive chefs are passionate about crafting delectable and nutritious meals that meet the dietary needs of our residents. Magnesium is also essential for brain function, and it may help reduce the risk of cognitive decline in older adults. BrainWise is as much a lifestyle as it is a program at MorningStar by which we prioritize the use of fresh ingredients to support brain health through its high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds. The goal of MorningStar’s culinary team is not just to create flavors to delight the eye and palate, but to leverage the phenomenal benefits of these aptly named “Super Foods,” items like acai berries, Omega 3 fats, and magnesium in foods like dark chocolate and dark greens. However, we know a lack of exercise and activity can cause reduced muscle strength and flexibility, and lead to health problems that make beginning exercise that much more difficult. In fact, one government study estimated “nearly 80% of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week, with adults 65 and older being the least likely to engage in a regular exercise routine.”
Experts recommend older adults make a plan to stay more active and commit to it. Before you begin any new exercise or activity, talk to your doctor as your health challenges may make some physical activities not possible. Guidance from your healthcare providers can help develop a plan most effective in achieving overall conditioning despite any limited endurance. Areas to focus on include strengthening leg muscles to improve mobility and balance, which is part of maintaining your independence as strong legs support so many basic everyday activities, such as sitting down, standing up, and walking. In addition, safe upper body exercises are important in giving a person the strength to get up from an armchair or carrying and lifting items as part of performing routine household activities. Exercises focusing on maintaining or improving balance are also important in reducing a person’s risk for a fall. For independent living or assisted living, MorningStar of Billings is the perfect community to enjoy stress-free retirement years. Studies report approximately 12-18% of people aged 60 or older have some level of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). So how do you know if you are one of them? The first step to diagnosing MCI typically comes after a person starts to complain of forgetfulness or cognitive problems or initiated at the urging of family members. Doctors explain it is usually more serious if it comes at the request of those closest to the person because as a person develops more of the signs of Alzheimer’s disease, they are often not aware of their memory loss. So, how is MCI diagnosed?
Your doctor will begin with a thorough evaluation to try and determine if the problem is MCI, Alzheimer’s, normal age-related memory loss, or caused by another factor. It is important to note not all cases of MCI develop into dementia and an evaluation could identify medications as the problem. A Harvard Medical School article states, “Establishing the cause and scope of the impairment is helpful in setting a baseline for future evaluations to determine if the condition is progressing to dementia.” Some of the preliminary tests include a complete blood workup to rule out anemia, infection, kidney and liver disorders, or diabetes. Other tests may check for thyroid abnormalities, elevated blood calcium and vitamin B12 deficiencies. Cognitive tests begin with an in-depth medical history as well as questions regarding the person’s memory lapses and other thinking problems. Your physician will probably request a family member be there to reaffirm and document the changes. Experts say quickly progressing memory problems are most likely another issue as true dementia progresses slowly. Your physician may refer you to a neuropsychologist for more tests including paper and pen and computer tests to assess memory, language and other cognitive skills including motor and visual function. If deemed necessary, they may do structural and functional brain scans or an amyloid PET scan, which detects in a living brain the signs of amyloid plaques, the hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. Along with independent living and assisted living, MorningStar of Billings offers individualized, loving care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Every aspect of MorningStar’s memory care is geared toward residents’ needs from meaningful activities, trained caregivers, food service, security and more.
