MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Arrowhead invites you to visit our Glendale senior living community. And while you are there, we would encourage you to stay for lunch to experience our exceptional dining experience. Just let us know when you set up your tour and please allow 90 minutes so you can enjoy a leisurely meal.
MorningStar recognizes that with proper diets and healthy choices food can be a healing medicine. That’s why our residents are provided with three daily meals that are meticulously prepared by our own Executive Chef. Our meals are prepared largely from scratch and are modified to accommodate low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low-fat diets along with seasonal menus.
MorningStar also makes it a priority to use BrainWise ingredients in our meals. BrainWise super foods include those that have been recognized by the medical community to support brain health and have a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds. Many of the common items we incorporate into our meals include items like acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate and dark greens. All meals are served restaurant-style in our dining room; and for intimate dinners, we have a private dining room. In addition, we have an onsite bistro.
For our memory care residents, we feel that dining is as much about socializing as it is about nutrition. MorningStar has lots of experience caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and we understand their abilities at the table may be compromised. This is why we serve lots of finger foods; softened and puréed, thickened liquids; and easy-to-recognize balanced meals packed with nutrients.
Furthermore, team members sit with residents to help make mealtime enjoyable and encourage their appetite. We also serve meals “family-style” from serving bowls and platters like we do at home. Family member are always welcome to join us.

MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Arrowhead proudly welcomes veterans to our community. Throughout all of MorningStar’s communities, we are privileged to have veterans from all five branches of military service call us home.
Whenever we hear that veterans or families of vets are interested in our community, we are pleased to direct them to local resources that can help to ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance”. This is a monthly benefit payment allocated by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs to certain wartime veterans and their survivors who qualify for financial need and have a doctor’s order for regular assistance with daily living activities.
Additional qualifications for the vets include having served at least 90 days of active duty, of which at least one day was spent serving during a period of a foreign war. Also, the vet must not have been dishonorably discharged. The Aid & Attendance benefit does not require the vet to have served overseas, seen combat or retired from the military. For surviving spouses to be eligible for the benefit, they must have been married to the vet at the time of their death and never remarried.

In order to thrive and lead fulfilling lives, people need to socialize with one another, and seniors are no different. In fact studies show loneliness can have a detrimental effect on the elderly while socializing can help to enhance and enrich seniors’ lives.
An article in the US News & World Report discusses a study on seniors’ social interactions conducted by the Rush Memory and Aging Project and funded by the National Institute on Aging. The study found that the most socially active seniors experienced one-fourth the rate of cognitive decline as seniors with the lowest levels of social activity. The results were independent of other factors that may influence cognitive decline including physical activity, general health, and age.
During a five year period, the Rush University project followed 1,138 adults with an average age of 80. Their research discovered that “elderly people with the highest levels of social activity -- doing things such as visiting friends, going to parties or attending church -- showed much lower levels of cognitive decline than those who were the least socially active.”
At MorningStar at Arrowhead, we strongly believe we need to address our residents’ overall health and wellbeing through physical, intellectual and spiritual activities as well as to help them engage socially. Our life enrichment programs present creative ways for residents to stay active and productive for both companionship and pure fun. Our programs tap into residents’ unique talents and experiences as well as allow them to find new avenues of interest. In addition to our in-house activities, we take group trips to a variety of places such as cultural destinations, parks, area malls, museums, and restaurants.

While children are encouraged to socialize, we often forget it is important for all of us, especially older adults, to socialize. However as we age, circumstances such as retirement, the death of a spouse, and friends moving away or falling ill can makes it difficult for seniors to maintain healthy social connections.
The National Institute on Aging recently reported on several studies that appear to suggest a strong correlation between social interactions and the health and well-being of older adults. The research indicates social isolation and loneliness may have significant adverse effects on the elderly and impact their physical as well as mental health. Scientists explain that, “Positive indicators of social well-being may be associated with lower levels of interleukin-6 in otherwise healthy people. Interleukin-6 is an inflammatory factor implicated in age-related disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and some forms of cancer.”
The studies suggest that socially isolated older adults have a higher risk of morbidity and mortality. Loneliness may be a contributing factor for elevated systolic blood pressure as well as put older adults at risk for symptoms of depression.
Researchers believe that strong social connections may help to reduce stress and stave off anxiety and depression. One study even showed a 70 percent slower decrease in cognitive decline in those with a strong social network.

Just as MorningStar at Arrowhead encourages anyone interested in our community to schedule a tour, so do most other assisted living communities. This is because you cannot really get an idea of what a community looks like or feels like without seeing it in person.
In addition to wanting your loved one to be happy in their new “home,” your priorities most likely include finding a community that is well run, clean, and within your price range. Experts recommend your first step should be to do some research over the Internet and on the phone. Narrowing down your choices includes considering things such as how convenient will it be for the family to visit and is it located close to a pharmacy, medical facilities and shopping. Furthermore, find out if the community is accepting new residents, and if not, you may want to go on their waiting list.
Senior support network Caring.com has a great checklist (it is even printable) of tips to consider for when touring an assisted living community. To start with, they say you should always listen to your gut instincts. From the moment you walk through the door, do you get a good feeling? Regardless of how beautifully decorated, does it feel welcoming and have a home-like atmosphere? If they offer the service, eat lunch with the residents as it will help to give you a more complete picture of the community.

We know people react differently to the many challenges we face in our lifetime, so it is no surprise that some individuals have a more difficult time adapting to senior living. Experts surmise that one of the reasons may be is that some seniors end up feeling that the decision was thrust on them, and a decline in their health left them with few choices.
It is important for families to keep in mind that the first few months will probably be the most difficult adjustment period for their loved one. In fact, once the initial transition is over, studies show that many older adults actually prefer the lifestyle senior living offers.
To assist your loved one with the transition, experts recommend a few things family member can do to help the process along. They explain that it is especially important during the first few weeks to visit frequently, but also caution against being too protective. Spending too much time with your loved one during their adjustment period can be counterproductive and may prevent them from adapting on their own.
Another thing that will help is to encourage your parent to participate in the community’s activities. The more involved they get in the community, the more likely they are to make new friends and start to feel at home.
Also take the time to help them personalize their suite by adding treasured mementos and framed family photos as well as wall art they loved from their last home. Add in furnishings like a comfy chair and a cozy throw in a color they love. Furthermore is space is at a premium, consider mounting the TV on a wall. When helping to decorate, do not forget safety. Make sure cords are safely tucked away and not in endanger of becoming trip hazards and that pathways are uncluttered and free of objects that could cause a fall.
