At MorningStar of Billings, we are extremely proud of our entire community’s response to the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. Our residents and their families have been highly supportive of our efforts to keep them or their loved ones safe; and our dedicated team members have stepped up and made it possible for us to protect the health and well-being of all those beneath our roof.
We understand the stress our families were under and feel honored by the trust they placed in us to keep their mothers and fathers safe. Our MorningStar team also recognizes that for many families we are the place they have entrusted to give their parents or grandparents the care they need to improve quality of life, and they count on us to continue providing these services. As one resident’s daughter writes, “I can’t imagine trying to work through this if Mom had still been on her own.” Another family member says, “My appreciation for everyone at MorningStar has not diminished in any way! According to Mom’s reports, everyone is doing an amazing job of protecting and caring for the residents.”
As Montana is coming out of quarantine and slowly reopening, we are following the guidelines of our state’s phasing and pacing, and will continue to stay abreast of current developments as we evaluate best practices in service to our residents. Moreover we will share details regarding our own community’s plans with our residents and family members; and if you have questions, please contact our Executive Director, Stacie Kautzman.

We all may be eating and drinking foods we consider to be healthy but they may contain far more sugar than we think they do. It can even happen with foods we do not necessarily think of as sweet such as ketchup of barbeque sauce. Also making what we assume is the healthier choice like “low fat” or “light” yogurt may actually contain more sugar than the regular variety. Some low-fat yogurt has over 30 grams of sugar; and the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends men consume no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams or 150 calories) of added sugar per day. For women, the amount is just 6 teaspoons (25 grams or 100 calories) per day.
Another food we think of as healthy is granola. While it is true that the main ingredient is rolled oats, which provides protein, healthy fats and fiber, it also can be loaded with lots of sugar and calories. This is where label reading can help as the Washington Post did a story on granolas and found a single serving can range from one gram of sugar to 14 grams. Another thing to look for are the words “added sugar” as the sugar from dried fruit is not bad for us (more calories for those watching) as is corn syrup or cane sugar. However do keep in mind that while honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar may be healthier, they still add empty calories.
Drinks such as sugared ice teas and flavored coffees also add a lot of sugar to our diets as do some sport drinks and vitamin waters so be sure to read the label. If you want to avoid empty sugary drinks altogether, make flavored waters by adding fruit or vegetable slices. Toss in some lime and cucumber slices to your water or a handful of berries, orange slices, or mint leaves; use your imagination.

MorningStar Senior Living’s Founder and CEO, Ken Jaeger, first began forming the idea of starting a company from a desire to create senior living that was defined by the human touch. He says his intention was to “re-create my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.” This simple but profound concept has driven the overwhelming success of our MorningStar brand. Now sixteen years later, MorningStar continues to add communities across the Western U.S., including MorningStar Memory Care at Bear Creek in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
At MorningStar at Bear Creek, our goal is to create a true home for our residents - one that feels like a family. To help us achieve this, our dedicated team strives to live up to our unique mission statement, which includes honoring God in all of our business practices and relationships and valuing all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals. The last part of our mission statement is to invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well, as we know our brand demands committed individuals who will use creative minds and compassionate hearts to serve our residents.
We also aspire to and nurture our core values of Love, Respect, Honesty, Fairness, Goodness, and Kindness to help us build our MorningStar family. As one potential resident’s family member described MorningStar: “Touring MorningStar at Bear Creek was impressive: enlightening as well as welcoming. The staff made sure all our questions and concerns were addressed by appropriate staff experts. The team was helpful, informative and efficient in helping us prepare for move-in. We feel a part of this community already!”

The fact that people are experiencing increased levels of anxiety is one of the many consequences of living in such uncertain times. In fact one poll from the Washington Post and ABC News in late March, says that “77 percent of American women and 61 percent of men were reporting personal stress.” The poll also found that 69% of Americans are worried about family members, and even more worry that the economic impact will be greater or worse than the Great Recession.
So how do we deal with the new normal? Experts stress that we need to remember to take care of ourselves, both our bodies and our minds. As we work from home, take care of our families full-time, and deal with the worries of the world; don’t forget to take the time to check in and listen to what you need.
Ben Crocker, MD, a medical director for a large primary care practice and a healthy lifestyle advocate, reminds us that it is okay to mourn for what we have lost. He says it is normal to feel sad about not being able to see family members or friends or unhappy about not being able to attend worship services or a favorite activity or class. When we acknowledge loss, it helps us to feel more grounded with our reality. Dr. Crocker suggests we intentionally add some ‘shutdown’ time in our schedule for “meditation and quietude.”
Other tools to help cope with anxiety include eating a nutrient-rich diet and making time to take a walk, ride your bike or exercise at home. Also remember it is important to get enough sleep each night as well as to connect socially with loved ones. Finally, don’t get caught up in just focusing on the negative but rather take some time out each day to be grateful for what we do have.
For the area’s finest memory care and assisted living, Glendale area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar at Arrowhead. We are still accepting residents during this difficult time, confident in our protective protocols. Please see our website for more information about our community and a message from the CEO detailing our coronavirus (COVID-19) response.

The MorningStar story began with a vision from our Founder/CEO, Ken Jaeger, who wanted to re-create senior housing that was defined by the human touch and felt much like his grandmother’s house – “a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.” Out of this loving concept that focuses on the power of relationships, came three mission statements upon which MorningStar was founded: Honor God in our business practices and relationships; Value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals; and Invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well.
Following these precepts, the MorningStar of Billings’ independent living and assisted living community is committed to providing the area with a lifestyle of wellness and comfort for carefree retirement years. To serve the various needs of seniors, we offer 32 free-standing cottages as well as 72 bright suites for independent living. In addition we have another 70 assisted living suites and 36 secure suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments.
While Montana slowly gets back to normal and our state starts begins to reopen, we want you to know that MorningStar of Billings senior living community will still be following the Governor’s guidelines to ensure the safety of our residents and team members. This includes continuing to prohibit non-essential visitors and vendors from entering our community. Also all team members who interact with residents must follow strict protocols regarding hygiene and protection, and we will continue the daily screening of staff for symptoms and prevent those who are ill from coming to work.
Currently we are safely accepting new residents; however it is being done in conjunction with a thorough screening process. New residents move directly into their private suite, where they will remain for a 14-day quarantine period; and staff entering the room will wear full PPE.
Remember our first commitment is to the safety of all those in our care. We all know that life changes can be fraught with anxiety and fear and moving into assisted living is certainly a major change for many seniors. However, experts say there are several things families can do to help ease the transition period.
One of those things is to help your loved one make a comfortable home in their new suite. Julia Bailey, a senior associate and interior design project manager with Denver-based OZ Architecture, explains that, "Moving into assisted living often can feel like a loss of independence and privacy for your loved one, but thoughtful interior design can go a long way toward improving happiness and well-being for the resident, as well as improving overall functionality of the new living space."
Ms. Bailey cautions that you need to remember to let your loved one have a say in how their new home will be decorated including the personal mementos and photos they want to bring with them and which ones they want to display. Trigging happy memories with sentimental items is a big step toward making their new place a real home. Also accent pillows and pictures are an easy way to add a lot of color and attractiveness to their place.
Please keep in mind safety concerns when placing furniture and avoid using area rugs that can become trip hazards or overcrowding a room and not leaving enough space to easily navigate. Install hand rails where needed and make sure there is easily accessible lighting in the bathrooms and hallways if the person is getting up at night.
Helping your loved stay organized can improve the home’s safety as well as the aesthetic. Consider any mobility issues the person may have and make sure frequently used items are within easy reach on a shelf. Chairs and sofas should be firm and stable.
